2019 Summer Transition Club

Owen & Laila ArtEach year we run a Summer Transition Club, specifically designed to help support dyslexic students about to face their move into Secondary School. Once again, the facilities were kindly supplied by Forest School in Snaresbrook while our wonderful sponsors, The Angle House Foundation, supplied funding for resources and staffing.

Great to see the children enjoying their week on the 2019 WFDA Summer School at Forest and learning what to expect when they start their new secondary schools in September. Here are some of them painting the frames they made in woodwork.

Children’s Classes

Every Monday, during term time, the WFDA run after-school classes for young learners throughout the year. Each July we celebrate the learner’s achievements and dedication by holding an Award Ceremony.

This year it was attended by over 70 students, parents, tutors, volunteers and trustees. Cllr. Robbins, Mayor of Waltham Forest, after having spoken very highly of the charity and the work it does with young people, presented each student with a Certificate and a £15 Amazon voucher which had been generously donated by the Council.

A Jack Petchey Foundation Award were also given to one of the  students, Grace Porter, who had demonstrated outstanding effort in her work.

You will find more details and photos from the Class Awards day here.

Carlos ran for WFDA!

Carlos Antonio Moo is from Leyton and discovered he was Dyslexic on his first day at Leytonstone Secondary School. In May 2015 he began a literacy class with WFDA

He says that the support he got from WFDA “Helped me with grammar, constructing sentences and with spelling and had a huge impact on my self-confidence”

He now plans to go on to Sixth Form College to study A levels in History, English Literature and Law

Since he first became involved in WFDA he has been a loyal champion of the Charity and its work. In 2016 and 2017 he took part in the Walk for Peace to raise funds for WFDA and has also acted as a volunteer peer mentor at WFDA Summer Clubs.

On Easter Monday he ran to raise money for WFDA in The London Easter 10k run in Regent’s Park.

If you would like to lend your support – even if it’s just the value of a Cream Egg! – he would be hugely grateful – as would all of us at WFDA.

Here is Carlos with his well-deserved medal.

Our recent quiz and curry night at the Star of India was a great success. We made £618 for Waltham Forest Dyslexia Association. Many thanks to everyone who took part for their support.
